Celebrating Women in Architecture This Women's History Month

We couldn’t let Women’s History Month pass us by without acknowledging the recent accomplishments of a few of our mentors. At our March 4th Seminar we raised our glasses in celebration of Barbara Spandorf and Elizabeth Graziolo.

Barbara was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows this year for her significant contribution to architecture and society throughout her career. Barbara shared with us the milestone opportunities and conversations that defined her career trajectory.

Elizabeth Graziolo founded Yellow House Architects in February 2020 after a successful 17-year career at Peter Pennoyer Architects. We got to hear from Elizabeth about why she made the leap, as well as her first weeks of setting up her office, defining her company image and managing her workload.

The celebration of Barbara and Elizabeth’s accomplishments, as well as those of all of our mentors and all women making their mark in the industry, continues! It’s important to shine a light on these women to ensure they are seen for their exceptional work and to inspire the younger generation of women entering the profession to stay the course, carrying on the legacy.

In the spirit of celebration, join us in offering our congratulations to one of our mentees, Dana Boylan, on the recent birth of her son. We look forward to meeting our youngest ally in equity.

Happy Women’s History Month!

Comment below with the name of one woman in architecture whose work and accomplishments you want to shine a light on…

We're in this together

As we stay at home doing our part to ‘flatten the curve’ - anticipating what awaits us on the other side of this global pandemic - we want you know that we are committed to staying connected and supporting each other so that we may tap into our collective resilience. We want you to know that we are thinking of you, and we want to remind you that The Mentoring Seminar Series for Women Entering the Profession of Architecture is a community and a resource. We are grateful for your engagement in this community and we are here to serve you. We would love to hear from you to know that you are well and we invite you to tap into the resource if you have the need. Many of you have our direct contact information as well as each others’. Don’t hesitate to use that information. Our mentors have been through multiple recessions before, and have always made it to the other side. Reach out to them to ask how they made it through. Stay engaged with the community by leaving questions, or comments, on our forum post - Ask us a question... Do not give up on architecture.  We will prevail!

At this time, we are unsure whether our May 7th Seminar with Claire Weisz and Nancy Kleppel will be possible in the traditional format. We are exploring the possibility of a virtual format in hopes of keeping our commitment to you. We will provide an update on this as soon as we possibly can.

We are hoping that you, your families and friends are all in good health and good spirits.

Sincerely,

Anik, Nancy & Angelique

One of the complaints of young women in the field of architecture is a lack of role models. To attack that from all ends, it’s important to shine a light on the work of women architects, especially to a wider audience outside of the professional community. So many women are doing wonderful work that isn’t being seen. It’s always a moment of celebration to see our work being recognized publicly. Thank you to House Beautiful!

As part of the celebration, post the name of a women architect you want to shine a light on and name your favorite project of hers.
